In the United States, 196 florists average $4,629 USD, ranging from $100 to $40,000. A minimum is a booking threshold, not a typical bill, and asking about it early saves weeks of dead-end enquiries. What Is a Wedding Florist Minimum Spend?
Calgary studio Flowers by Janie puts the definition plainly: "A minimum spend is the minimum budget our studio will work with to design wedding flowers." Below that line, the studio generally declines the booking. It isn't a judgment on your wedding; it's the smallest job that business can take on and still run properly.
Canada has clear published examples. Toronto's Botany Floral Studio states that "Full service wedding floral design starts at a minimum of $5,000, not including tax, delivery and set-up fees". Calgary's Flowers by Janie sets the same $5,000 floor for full service, and points smaller orders at a "Designer's Choice option available that starts at $2,500+gst" — a published route in below the full-service minimum.
Read those two tiers together and the logic becomes visible. The floor guards full-service design work: consultations, site visits, an installation crew. Personal flowers, the pieces for everyone who gets flowers at a wedding, usually sit outside it entirely.
What Do Published Minimums Average in Canada and the US?
Start with Canada. In our Canadian price study, 72 florists publish a minimum, and those minimums average $3,890 CAD. The floors themselves run from $100 to $25,000, which tells you how differently studios position the same policy. In the United States edition, 196 florists average $4,629 USD, with a range of $100 to $40,000.
Two cautions before you quote those figures at a florist:
- They're country-specific. The editions are never currency-converted, so compare a Canadian quote to the Canadian numbers and an American quote to the American ones.
- They're published list prices. The study is an observational census of what florists post on their own websites: 2,231 florists examined across the two editions (1,312 US and 919 Canada), 968 of whom publish pricing, for 9,534 observations in total. Not invoices, not a survey.

Why Do Florists Set Minimums at All?
Is a minimum just gatekeeping? The florists who write about theirs say otherwise, and the reasons hold up.
Flowers by Janie, whose own minimum is $5,000 plus GST, gives three:
- Flowers are pre-ordered in wholesale quantities for each booked wedding, and the extras from a small order can't be resold.
- Premium garden-style designs are genuinely expensive to create.
- Limiting the number of weddings per weekend protects the quality of service each couple receives.
The same studio's floor moves with logistics: $6,000 to $8,000 plus GST for mountain venues like Canmore, Banff and Lake Louise, because of permits, mileage and time, and higher again in August when demand peaks. A minimum, in other words, is priced like everything else in floristry: by what the job actually costs.
Floral business educator Alison Ellis of Real Flower Business describes setting her minimum once wedding inquiries exceeded her available dates, "to ensure my profit margins". That's the honest core of it. A minimum is a capacity and profitability tool, not gouging.
One myth worth flagging: the floor is not the typical spend. Flowers by Janie says most of their clients budget "double or triple the minimum spend". That's one studio describing its own clientele rather than a market statistic, but it makes the point. The minimum is the door, not the room.
A Minimum Tells You More Than a Bouquet Price
Here's the odd thing about wedding flower pricing: single items look reassuringly similar across borders. The study's average bridal bouquet is $246 CAD in Canada (146 florists) and $248 USD in the United States (247 florists). Nearly identical.
But a bouquet price can't tell you whether a studio will take your order. The minimum can, and on that measure the averages sit surprisingly high. The Canadian average published minimum, $3,890, is more than the study's modelled flowers-only total for a 50-to-100-guest wedding, which is $3,404 CAD. The American picture matches: a $4,629 average minimum against a modelled $4,403 USD total.
Sit with that comparison for a second. The average full-service floor already exceeds what a modelled mid-size, flowers-only order comes to. How to Plan Around a Wedding Florist Minimum
You have more room than the floors suggest. In rough order of usefulness:
- Ask for the minimum in your first message, alongside your date, venue and guest count. It's the fastest qualifying question in wedding planning.
- If you're under it, ask about a personal-flowers, designer's-choice or delivery-only tier. Flowers by Janie's $2,500 Designer's Choice option is exactly that kind of route, and Ottawa's Nectar Flowers says it takes weddings as small as a single bouquet and a boutonniere.
- Adjust the list, not the rate. Minimums rarely move, but what fills them does: Flowers by Janie describes a $5,000 order as typically covering personal flowers plus ceremony and reception pieces — "4-6 bouquets, 6-10 boutonnieres, 6-12 centerpieces and flowers for a ceremony archway or fireplace".
- Favour studios that publish their prices, because then you can do this arithmetic before you ever send an email.
