With regular care, cut lilies typically last well over a week, sometimes closer to two, because the buds open in sequence rather than all at once. When to send Lilies

For sympathy flowers in Toronto, a white lily arrangement is the convention for good reason. For a friend recovering at home, unscented Asiatic lilies in pink, yellow or orange strike a hopeful note without overwhelming a small room, which makes them a natural choice for a get-well-soon delivery. One practical caution: some hospital wards restrict fragrant or fresh flowers, so check the ward's policy first, or send the bouquet to the recipient's home instead. Beyond those two, Stargazers make a dramatic romantic gesture, and the lily is the traditional flower of a 30th wedding anniversary. Easter lilies mark the spring season from late March through April.
Caring for your Lilies
Cut lilies repay a few minutes of care with one of the longest runs a vase flower can give. Start by trimming 2 to 3 cm off each stem at a 45-degree angle, using a sharp knife rather than scissors, which can crush the stem's water channels. Clear the lower stems of foliage before they reach the water, then add the flower-food sachet to clean, cool water.
From there, a short routine keeps the display going:
- Change the water every 2 to 3 days, and re-cut the stems each time.
- As each bud opens, gently pull off the rust-coloured anthers. Lily pollen stains fabric and petals, and removing it keeps the flowers looking fresh longer.
- Park the vase somewhere cool — out of direct sun, off the radiator, away from ripening fruit.
- Snip off spent blooms so the remaining buds get their turn.
Cared for this way, lilies typically give well over a week in the vase, with the last buds still opening as the first blooms fade. One safety note: every part of a true lily is highly toxic to cats, so keep lilies out of a home with cats altogether.
About Lilies delivery in Toronto
A lily bouquet arrives half-finished, and that's the point. Florists cut lilies while most buds are still closed, so the two or three open blooms you see on day one become six or eight over the week, each flower unfolding on its own schedule. Few cut flowers put on that kind of show.
Three families cover most of what Canadian florists sell. Oriental hybrids, including deep-pink Stargazer and pure-white Casablanca, carry the strongest fragrance and the largest blooms. Asiatic hybrids are unscented and offer the broadest colour choice, from yellow and orange through pink and red, which makes them the everyday pick for cheerful arrangements. LA hybrids sit between the two, with bigger, sturdier flowers than Asiatics and little to no scent. Ontario's garden lilies bloom from roughly June through August, Asiatics first, Orientals following in July and August. Cut lilies are another story: the flower trade keeps them available in every month, so Toronto florists offer fresh lilies year-round. Easter lilies peak from late March through April.
