Wrist corsage or pin-on corsage?

Wrist corsages sit on an elastic or ribbon band and need no help to put on, which is why they are the usual choice for mothers and grandmothers. Pin-on corsages look tidier in photographs but need a firm fabric to pin into — they do not work on fine silk or a knit.

How many boutonnieres do most weddings need?

Count everyone standing at the front, then add the fathers, grandfathers, ushers, readers and the officiant if you want them included. Most weddings land between four and twelve. It is worth ordering one spare — pins fail.

When should boutonnieres be delivered?

On the morning of the wedding, kept cool and out of direct sun until they are worn. They are the last thing put on and the first thing forgotten, so we deliver them with the personal flowers rather than to the venue.

How do you pin a boutonniere correctly?

On the left lapel, stem pointing down, roughly level with the top of the pocket. Push the pin in from behind the lapel so no metal shows on the front, angle it through the stem, and bring it back through the fabric. On the full-service tier we do this for you on the day.

Can boutonnieres and corsages match the bridal bouquet?

Yes, and that is usually the intention. Pulling one flower out of the bouquet and repeating it across the buttonholes is what ties a wedding party together visually without everyone wearing the same thing.

Who usually wears what

Use this as a counting checklist. The pieces that get missed are almost always the ones nobody assigned to a person.

The couple
Whoever is not carrying a bouquet usually wears a boutonniere, and it is normally the one piece that differs from the rest — a slightly larger flower, or one lifted straight out of the bridal bouquet.
Groomsmen and attendants
Matching buttonholes, one step simpler than the couple. A repeated single flower with a leaf and a wrapped stem is the classic, and it survives a long day of hugging better than anything fussy.
Mothers and grandmothers
A corsage, worn either on the wrist or pinned. Ask which they prefer before you order — it is the single most common last-minute change we are asked to make.
Fathers and grandfathers
A boutonniere, usually matching the groomsmen rather than the couple. Easy to overlook when you are counting, and awkward to add on the morning of.
Readers, ushers and officiants
Small buttonholes are a graceful way to mark anyone with a role in the ceremony without adding them to the wedding party.

Dropped off, or pinned on for you

On the delivery-only tier we deliver the buttonholes and corsages boxed, labelled by name, with pins included and instructions in the lid. It works, and most weddings do it this way.

On the full-service tier we arrive and pin them ourselves. That is worth considering when there are a lot of pieces, when the fabrics are delicate, or when nobody in the room has pinned a boutonniere before.

A boutonniere is a single small arrangement pinned to a lapel — sometimes called a buttonhole. A corsage is larger and worn either on the wrist, on a band, or pinned to a dress or handbag. Both use the same flowers; the difference is how they are worn.
