Caring for your hydrangeas
Hydrangea means 'water vessel' in Greek, and the name is the whole care guide: these blooms drink through their petals as well as their stems. Keep the vase full — genuinely full, topped up daily — and mist the flower heads every day or two; it's the single biggest extender of hydrangea vase life. Recut the woody stems on a steep diagonal when they arrive.
If a head wilts early, don't give up on it: recut the stem and submerge the entire flower head in cool water for 30–45 minutes. It looks drastic and works remarkably well — hydrangeas rehydrate through the petals and usually stand back up. Keep the arrangement cool and out of direct sun, and expect five to nine days of vase life, longer for the green and antique varieties.
Florist's trick for a head that droops within the first day: recut the stem and dip the bottom two centimetres in boiling water for twenty seconds before returning it to cool water — it clears the sap that blocks hydrangeas' uptake. It looks brutal and works better than anything else.
